Payday Super Is Here. Is Your Business Compliant?

From 1 July 2026, one of the biggest payroll changes in years has arrived. Payday Super is now compulsory for Australian employers.

If your business has employees, you can no longer wait until the end of the quarter to pay superannuation. Super must now be paid each payday, with contributions generally needing to reach your employees’ super funds within seven business days of payday.

For many businesses, this is a significant change to payroll processes, cash flow management and compliance.

Why the Change?

The Australian Government introduced Payday Super to reduce unpaid super, improve compliance and ensure employees receive their retirement savings sooner. It also gives the ATO much greater visibility over whether employers are meeting their super obligations.

The Risks of Getting It Wrong

Many businesses have traditionally treated super as a quarterly task. That approach is no longer an option.

Businesses that are not ready may face:

  • Late or missed super payments
  • Additional ATO charges and penalties
  • Increased administration
  • Cash flow pressures
  • Time-consuming corrections and employee enquiries

The ATO now has much greater ability to identify businesses that are falling behind, making it more important than ever to have reliable payroll systems and processes in place.

Xero Makes Payday Super Much Easier

If you’re using Xero Payroll, much of the heavy lifting can be automated.

Xero enables businesses to:

  • Calculate super as part of every pay run
  • Process super directly from payroll
  • Reduce manual data entry
  • Keep payroll and super in one system
  • Minimise the risk of missed payments

For businesses still relying on manual processes, spreadsheets or older payroll systems, now is the time to review your software as digital lodgement through software systems is now compulsory. Xero has introduced features specifically designed to help businesses meet the new Payday Super requirements.

Don’t Wait Until There’s a Problem

We’ve already seen businesses caught out by the new rules because their payroll processes weren’t ready.

The cost of setting up the right system is small compared with the time, stress and potential penalties that can result from getting it wrong.

If your payroll process hasn’t been reviewed recently, now is the perfect time.
